Shahzia Sikander

When finding a definition for ‘art’ the only phrase that comes to my mind is the expression of one’s creative skill and imagination. The word imagination brings out this thought of largeness and expressiveness to me and therefore when viewing a large painting, one immediately gets drawn towards it and tries to create a connection with the painting. Shahzia Sikander was an artist who was known for her embrace of miniaturist paintings in the Indo-Persian style.To many, miniature paintings seemed somewhat restrictive because of the space present for the artists to express themselves and are also looked at as a â€Å"faded genre that had more to do with craft and technique than genuine expression†(Bhaha, Homi). But according to me, Sikander’s artwork successfully portrayed her thoughts and helped us gain knowledge about her culture.What attributes to making her paintings so acknowledged is the way her artwork embodies not only her culture but also  "works across diverse cultural references – Hindu, Christian, Classical, mythological and folkloric† (Rachel Kent). When talking about ‘elements of narrative’ in artwork, I feel that one is referring to the way in which the particular artwork is portrayed and the techniques that the artist has used to portray his/her skill and imagination. Viewing all of Sikander’s artwork, the one element that is seen as having and influence on all her works of art is her cultural background.Her adoption of the miniaturist tradition took place while she was studying at the National College of Arts in Lahore, Pakistan where this form of art was seen as an â€Å"unconventional choice that conjured associations with imperialism on one hand and, on the other, deeply rooted local traditions of story-telling and popular mythology† (Rachel Kent). One of the reasons that it felt like story telling and popular mythology to me was because when viewing each painting, it felt like one was viewing a page from a book.The paintings looked flat like a page but at the same time contained layers within which gave them depth. One particular artwork of hers that gives me this impression is â€Å"Writing the Written† (2000). In all her works and this one in particular one can see how â€Å"she explored compositional constructs such as repetition, the placement of color across the surface of the work, the use of a flattened, stacked perspective and the relationship between image and border† (Rachel Kent). Repetition is seen a lot in â€Å"Writing the Written†, whether it is the repetition of certain symbols of just design.The most important factor to keep in mind when analyzing Sikander’s artwork is the size of each piece. Each miniature painting is not more than 8 x 51/2 inches, which is just like analyzing a painting that has been printed on an A4 sized paper. Viewing a painting so small can make us see the artist in a completel y different light because as the audience, we are usually not used to being able to glance at a whole painting at one time, and by this I mean that our eyes are usually used to moving around, moving to different corners of the painting since we relate the size of majority of paintings to being large.When viewing â€Å"Writing the Written† for the first time, the first thing that caught my eyes was the repetition of horses in the boarder. Since I am of Hindu religion, the whole painting felt like Sikander was trying to tell her audience a story about the Hindu culture. The horse is linked to the Hindu god Varuna that shows how Sikander is incorporating mythology in her artwork. Also, the focus of this painting seems to be the two figures that are placed somewhat in the center of the painting, which to me represents the Hindu gods Krishna and Radha.Considering that this is a miniature painting, it doesn’t seem ‘small or simple’ in any way because there is so much going on in it. The blurred circle in the center is what got me thinking because in the article â€Å"Intimate Immensity†, Rachel Kent mentioned, â€Å"historically, the circle invited a range of associations. It is at once a complete unit, unbroken at any point so without a beginning or end; a spiritually changed symbol across cultures, associated with the continuity of the life cycle†.But I felt like by using the circle to blur out the faces she was in some way referring to the problems that Muslim women have to face everyday. In an interview by Homi k Bhabha, Sikander mentions that even for her such things as the veil that she uses a lot in her work, remains exotic. She states that the first time that she put one in her work everyone reacted strongly. So when looking at the blurred faces in her painting I felt like she was trying to portray how Muslim women are forced to hide their faces from the rest of the world. Images within images, borders within borders; all form active constituents in Sikander’s art of transformation†(Rachel Kent). This technique of Sikander’s is seen in a lot of her artworks especially in â€Å"Writing the Written† where at ones first glance of the painting it seems like there are three different frames to it and this to me makes the painting look layered and gives it some form of depth. The outer most layer is that of the border with the horses imprinted on it, the second layer consists of the two blurred figures and the third layer is that of the backdrop.The tiny blue circles that start of big on the outer most layer and then gradually become smaller as they move towards the inner most frame better represent this depth that Sikander is trying to portray. According to me it is quite difficult to analyze every aspect of Sikander’s paintings because there always seems to be so much going on. One of the reasons that I feel this way is also because of the way she represents movemen t in her paintings. In â€Å"Writing the Written†, the movement is solely portrayed by the various horses.First, the way she draws them in different directions on the outer most border and then by the single house that is shown jumping on the top left edge of the painting. At first, when I read the title â€Å"Writing the Written† I didn’t necessarily understand why she would give the painting that name but then I started notice the writing on the outer most border which seemed like Arabic to me. In an interview Sikander says, â€Å"The text becomes more like horses or there’s the suggestion of movement, and that aspect is my experience of reading the Koran where I would read it with no particular understanding because I was a child.I could read Arabic, but I couldn’t understand it and the memory of it is this amazing visual memory where the beauty of written words supersedes everything else† (Bhabha, Homi). One can see that Sikander used th e Arabic words for the beauty of the language rather than the meaning behind the words. Through these minor details we can see how Sikander incorporates different cultures her painting rather than being this ‘traditional’ artist that many consider her to be.Seeing that Sikander’s artwork consisted of so many traditional figures and symbols, many considered her artwork as that of a traditional Muslim artist who I trying to portray the different between the East and West to her audience. But seeing how she incorporated cultures such as Islamic, Arabic and Hindu in her painting â€Å"Writing the Written†, it seems like she is trying to â€Å"bring together the difference between the East and the East, the nearest difference, the intimacy of difference that can exist within any culture† (Rachel Kent).It took me a while to understand the complexity of her miniature paintings, but in the end I feel that they are as expressive and creative as any other â⠂¬Ëœlarge’ painting because of the addition of intricate details and the incorporation of various cultures. Behavioral change

Managers sometimes fail to promote values involving people and teamwork in the workplace. This condition occurs because managers are afraid being disliked by their employees, do not care about their organizations’ credibility and vitality, or perform their work simply out of obligation or for a paycheck.In addition, organizations are not successful in holding their managers accountable for living such values. The failure to uphold people values and teamwork invite organization’s cynicism, undermine credibility, and sap an organization of its vitality.Thus, organizations should consider advocating for behavioral change so that managers become more accountable for living the values involving people and teamwork. Introduction As one of the assignments to be completed in the first class in organizational behavior, a course project was initiated to find some answers to the questions why managers fail to promote the values involving people and teamwork and why organizations a re not successful in holding their managers accountable for living such values.The new economy of the twenty-first century requires organizations to adapt to changing conditions, and therefore, organizations should consider making their managers accountable for living such values. The methodology used for completing this project was brief. It included reading and understanding the contents cited in articles, books and other medium that are relevant to behavioral changes, organizational behavior, and leadership and management. The results of the understanding of the relevant contents were documented.Such contents included the answers why managers fail to promote the people values and teamwork and why organizations are not successful in holding their managers accountable for living such values. The causes and conclusions for such failures and the recommendations addressing the causes were also documented. Results Managers usually advocate values involving people and teamwork, but some times exempt themselves from their practice. Some organizations’ biggest disappointment is their failure to adopt these general values or people values as noted in a research that involved thousands of participants at more than 30 large companies.The employees rated their managers’ ability to effectively deal with individuals whose behavior undermines teamwork. The results of the rating showed that the employees rated their managers last among 92 elements of effective leadership. In that research, the researchers asked qualitative questions such as asking the employees to describe the difference between the values the managers preach and the values they live. Most of the employees’ common responses included stories of the company’s failure to deal with leaders who do not live the people values.It is rather hard for the managers to realize their own challenge of the changing their employees’ behavior. It is so hard for managers to change their emplo yees’ behavior because the managers sometimes feel that they are human and can also fall into mistakes anytime during their life. Hence they want to be loved by their employees who also at times grade them in a performance based work place. The managers sometimes feel that it would be hard if they talked to their employees about the employees’ lack of coordination and the spirit of teamwork that is missing from them.They fear that by confronting their employees, it will break loose their working relationship and this might lead to performance problems. A perfect leader though is one who leads by example and is followed by the people who he is leading. They should be more respected and no one should fear them because they help change the people’s bad behavior. In addition to that, managers understand the mission and vision of the organization; they do not care about living the people values and teamwork necessary to uplift their own standards.What they care about is to come to work simply out of obligation and the monetary gains. People in most cases spend their one third of their lives working in different work places. While for majority of the people who work, work offers them an opportunity to get finance necessary to uplift their living standards. While to others, by working, they develop and make the world a better place than they found it. The managers who started to work afresh from college and are on job orientation, their work gives them the money as a required necessity for their upkeep.They focus on the working their whole lives for the purposes of getting the required money for good sustainability. They depend on their work more than satisfying the need of attaining the required performance in any given work. They are not and will never be workaholics but will indeed give them time to attend to their normal work. The managers see work as something that will reward them and make them richer than is the case. Besides all this, the y again receive more rewards and then continuously seek compensation for any little work that they do.Hence they make work look like it is an exchange of their efforts with the money or the rewards they normally get from the organisation. Most managers believe that, their identities are to support their own families and helping with other issues like ensuring their own children are in school and the like. So they end up believing that they are working and their work is a job that requires their knowledge and the general input of the required information into work. They are less likely to se their needs as a societal issue but only see it as something that will reward them.Therefore, managers at job orientation cares so much for their upkeep, to ensure that their gas is filled and billed but gives little care to those employees who need promotions for their work. The managers need to work to provide the organization with the required knowledge and the productive results that at last will be a credit to their organization. Or don’t managers care because they do not know what to do? Bill Gates had this to say to the many Harvard students graduates on June 7, 2007; that ‘often we don’t do anything about inequities and problems we see in the world, not because we don’t care but because we don’t know what to do’.So turning these studies the students have achieved into meaningful and the desired impact it has on the society, should be the major concern for these graduating students. Further, we can also blame the organizations that do not promote coaching for behavioral change. Due to their lack of coaching for behavioral change, some organizations were not successful to hold managers accountable for living the people values and teamwork. Organizations need to coach for behavioral change. A manager that can be coached for behavioral change can make him/her a more credible leader.Leaders with credible results can help those wit h the essential habit in order to develop into meaningful, personal and the organizational development and success. If the manager delivers his/her promises including measuring employees on their behaviors and attributes, then that manager values and cements the bonds of leadership with employees. Behavioral coaching is simple, however, it is not easy to implement. Managers may have difficulty giving and receiving honest feedback and making the time for genuine dialogue.But, if organizations are serious about their espoused values, shouldn’t they ensure that their managers demonstrate the behaviors the organizations promote. If the policy if the organization is to change the managers way of adopting to different and varied values of their workers, then the organizations have to change the behavior of the managers at work. And again if the organizations have to change the managers way of thinking, it has to first change the principles it has and their way of thinking. For litt le behavioral change, there is an excellent overall change of the drive and the means of change.The organizations need to examine the vision before making any preference to what they want their people to achieve. They need to effect their changes by looking at the employees and specifically exploring the required changes and finally effecting the changes where necessary. The managers need to determine the foundations of the behavioral changes before offering to fix the required changes. Then once they have specifically noted the behaviors to be changed, they can then change those behaviors and indeed this will affect the whole change required in the organization.The managers of any organizations and the organization itself need to be very specific and observe the effects before any good behavior change can take place. They should let people choose their behaviors basing on what hey think might happen to them as result of the lack of the behavior change. Again when resistance is obse rved to any problems, the issue of verbal persuasion rarely works but rather it is an attack to the aggrieved individual. People might not want to give up on whatever they like or they derive pleasure on. They want something that can categorically turn their weakness to something else.The managers need to come up with innovative different ways of solving the whole issue and creating their own personal experiences. They need to work on behavioral change with the nothing but rather leave this world to change these individuals on their unwelcome ways. As told, the actual real life will change them through the hard hitting life experiences. The stories create an atmosphere that is well understood to change the people views and the world. This is because; stories help individuals transport them towards a social and good listener who is applying different rules for the logical analysis and the criticism to the story itself.Further again, managers may want to consider moving towards findin g the required basics to colleagues who can tutor him or her on the couching available for the situation that demands the task. This is not mystery but it requires an individual who is disciplined and can act with the required integrity and commitment necessary for the behavioral science expertise. Simply by sitting down with the person you are coaching and analyzing the perceptions of his or her colleagues, you will be able to change your relationship with that person. And the person will change too.And when people improve, their self-confidence goes up. They keep doing what works, and they keep getting better. Conclusions Managers should promote use of people friendly procedures and the values for the benefit of the organization. The managers need to change their behaviors in order to assist the management of the organization well so far. The managers of this world today can be successful change leaders if they have the capacity to be flexible and the change and cope with the spec ific needs of an environment within an organization.They should be caregivers and should not fear any employee and the offering of the required services of couching their employees. The managers who must effective leaders care about the employees who come up with contributions that can assist in the accomplishment of the goals of the organizations and teams available within their regions. The managers and or leaders who are effective should not be afraid in providing the required feedback to employees and making them feel appreciated and they should not care so much about their salaries.The values involving people, teamwork and the coexistence can help improve their production and performance and also improve their organization’s ability and responsibility. They should be very careful with managers and hold their managers accountable for any thing that goes wrong within the organization. The one approach to holding them accountable for all the assets and resources within the organization is by coaching them for behavioral change. Coaching should be able to enlighten the society and make the world know and be a better.Since coaching is the best option that could help any struggling company to come to terms with the reality on the ground. Therefore, the management should be very lenient to those who perform according to the well being of the organization. The organization again should help those people who need the couching so as to uplift their morale and the desire to grow through proper development mechanisms that will also help the firm or the organization realize it potential and the growth necessary for its survival and existence.In order to achieve the good results and to boost the morale of every employee and make them realize that they can too achieve anything they set their minds to achieve. The coaches should only help those employees who need their help. Recommendation The organization must select leader who will bring them the desired values and not those who doesn’t have a vision, values and the esteem necessary for the growth of the organisation. Otherwise these individuals might bring the good and the shadow side of the organization to a halt.The business groups should be less so ensure accountability based on the relationships and if the groups are allowed to larger, they make the process to be crippled. The supervisors should be people who have the talents and the capacity to effect the required change. They need to be experts to manage the change and the behaviors necessary for the good growth. hey require leader to involve the supervisors and coach them to produce the good results. Then let the employees have the goals and the desire to effectively establish their visions within the organization.They need to measure how employees live their lives and the help them change anything they need in order to increase performance. They again should have a direct and performance based work that involves the recogni tion of the efforts put in fir the success of the company or organization. There need to be reward schemes capable of rewarding the best amongst them and ensuring that the supervisors and other employees have laid bare their different issues associated to work.There also need to be leaders who need to be aligned with their employees in order to permit maximum utility of the available resources. There need to be issues to deal with the conflicts directly when to happen and these shows the maturity in the leaders. The leaders should be able to teach the accountability to their employees and ensure that the work is done their satisfaction. And finally, the leaders who do not perform should be left out and only work with the leaders that can produce the excellent results.The results could be seen during the evaluation of the value of the organization and or the firm. In addition to this, if they were dealing with people who have the will, the drive and capacity to change their behavior and operate in an environment that allows them the chance and the opportunity to change and work for an organization that is growing towards an efficient way and headed in the right direction. The management should identify the characteristics and the attributes of manager that is undergoing the cauching.These should not be from scratch but rather should have the necessary knowledge as noted on the Kouzes ( ). The once you have developed the leadership in him or her, it makes the manager to be characterized as an important person who understands the work and the philosophical ways of working and ensures that, he got all the requirement so of the perfect or is it the good manager?. This will in turn boost the process and develop the commitment. There should be systems to determine the good and meaningful feedback that is the core of any growing business.The key people here may include the peers and the customers and also many others. Balanced workforce that does not require or bring challenges to the managers should be put in place to make the work easier for the manager. Always collect feedback from the employees often in the written forms. This helps the managers be well versed with the problems the employees are facing. There needs to be data analysis using the appropriate techniques and the also need to talk to the manager and find out the reason why their employees do not want them to react to their information.There again need to be action plan that will help them analyze and help them also implement the desired goals. This boosts their morale and knows what to do. There lastly need to be a response from the managers to the stakeholders. Then develop a program that goes on and on and that it requires the regular follow up to see how they are doing and also there performance. The results need to be reviewed and the procedure to start over again. Behavioral coaching is an important aspect that can improve behavior though it cannot solve the problems such as the performance problems.Coaches need to plan their work and ensure that the customer is qualified because they have very limited amount if time to invest in their own customers for good returns on their investment. They have a very limited amount of time therefore they only invest their time where they will get a good return on investment. Behavioral changes or rather couching will only work if the manager is willing to adopt the necessary changes. Behavoir changes do not help if the company has already fired the employee or the manager. The person may lack the necessary skills and the intelligence information to undertake the job.Hence that person is written off and it may not be necessary to couch him or her. If the organization has the wrong mission, it will be hard to effect such behavior changes because these changes are how get there process but not where to go process. Duty of care Essay

1.1+1.2 Sometimes individuals may want to do something which could be a risk to their health and safety. Being a staff member means having a duty of care to that person, it includes doing everything possible to keep them safe, but also having a duty to respect the individuals rights and choice, therefore there is a dilemma. It could be that the individual no longer wishes to use their walking frame, but their care plan states that they need it to move from place to place and as a member of staff, their responsibility is to ensure and encourage the use of the walking frame for the individual. In this scenario a risk assessment could be carried out to ensure that it is managed as safely as possible. The risks would need to be explained that are involved to the individual and make sure they understand. The staff could come to a compromise, to use a stick for a while instead, to see how they managed, then monitor the situation. All this should be documented including any risk assessment carried out. If the individual still insists on walking unaided they should sign to say they are aware of the risks involved. Another scenario could be that an individual refuses to take their medication. Remind them of why they take the medication and it’s benefits and again advise them of the risks involved in not taking their medication. If they still refuse, ensure this is noted on their medication record and reported so others are aware if a problem occurs. If the individual insists on doing something which is unsafe or risky that is their choice it must be respected as it’s their right, but there is a duty of care to uphold and everything must be done to keep them safe for their individual’s rights. Conflicts could arise between staff to staff. One staff member may think that there is an issue. An example of this is that a member of staff may think a child is a slow developer, and may need additional support to help them, such as with their communication skills. Another staff member may think that there is no issue the child is just developing at their own pace and that it is normal. Everybody has individual rights, they have rights against the duty of care therefore children and parents have the right to privacy, but it is the staffs duty of care to safeguard, therefore any concerns that may arise about abuse would override their privacy, as the duty of care is much stronger. This has the dilemma of making parent feel  that the staff has taken the duty of care too far, as the duty of care has been overridden their right to privacy, their right still exists to only knows that need to no. It is important that issues are raised in such way that shows concern for a child, and not criticising a parent/carer. If a discussion needs to take place, it needs to be where the staff and parent are alone to remain confidentiality with a clear focus on the child’s best interests. 2.3 There are many organisations that are in place to get additional support and advice about conflicts and dilemmas. Learning support is one of these, having learning support in the setting for children with learning difficulties can be a great help, however if the child does not want to seek the help, the staff can only advise them, not force them, however having them in the setting the child would then know they can seek help from them when needed. Speech and behavioural therapists are another additional support for those with speech impairments and behavioural problems, these can come in the help children communicate and feel a part of the setting, and not feel ‘different’ from others around them. The setting can seek advice from child protection, as if there is a worry about a child, the manager can contact them for advice on what to do and if the concern is a serious matter that needs to be taken care of immediately or not. 3.1+3.2 If a parent/guardian has an issue to raise that involves their child or any aspect within the nursery, they should report this to the manager of their child’s room as soon as the issue occurs. All effort is put it to solve issues that are raised in the setting, complaints can be written or verbal, written complaints are usually replied within three months. There is a framework which the issues will be dealt within. A matter relating to a child may be discussed between the parent and child’s key person or their room manager. If a complaint is remained unsolved, the matter will be raised by the childcare services manager with the appropriate authority and the parent will be kept informed on the progress at each stage of the procedure. If a parent arrives in the setting with a complaint the practitioner should establish if this is something they can deal with personally. If it is, they  can deal with it there and then or make an appointment to see the parent if they are currently otherwise occupied. If it is a matter that needs to be dealt with by a more senior member of staff then the parent can be referred in that direction. When a complaint arises, the setting should find a way to prevent this from occurring again and find solutions to overcome the situation. When dealing with complaints the staff member should always remain polite and see the parents point of view. They should take responsibility for what has occurred by understanding and taking control of the situation. Notes could be taken down for reminders what complaints have been received before and these documentations be kept in a secure place, the complaints that are made from a parent should be kept confidential regarding if it is to do with their child or the setting itself.

Copyright also gives moral rights to be identified as the creator of certain kinds of material, and to object to distortion or mutilation of it. The purpose of copyright is to allow creators to gain economic rewards for their efforts and so encourage future creativity and the development of new material, which benefits us all" (UK Patent Office 2001) Copyright Law in the UK: As already observed the copyright does not subsist in an idea but subsists in the particular form of representation of the idea. The peculiarity of the copyright law is that the copyright arises without cost or registration at the moment the representation of the idea is completed by its author. With a view to obviate the difficulties in protecting the monopoly rights of authors and creators in the form of a unique protection right, the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 were enacted. The First World War Satire Essay How does Blackadder Goes Forth satirize the First World War and how does it fit into the situation comedy genre as a whole? A situation comedy, or a sit-com, is a comedy series projected from radio or television. The programme itself is based upon how characters react to unusual or comic situations. Situation comedies follow specific characters that encounter situations and then they try and deal with them. In each episode of a situation comedy, the story follows the same characters. Most situation comedies are set in a specific place that forms the set for every episode. A flat is commonly used in situation comedies for the set. Popular examples of flat share situation comedies are Only Fools and Horses and Friends. These two sit-coms are extremely popular, and both are set in a flat. Situation comedies used to form gaps in between more important shows. This was soon changed as the demand for sit-coms massively grew. They are now one of the most dominant television genres around. Blackadder is a situation comedy. It is a most unusual sit-com as in each series the scene is based on a different timeline. Blackadder has been through Elizabethan times, many other timelines and important historical times, and then ends up with the final series in World War One. Most other sit-coms dont do this instead each of their different series is set on the same timeline and in the same place. This is one of the points that make Blackadder different, as in each series the eager watchers dont know what to expect. Blackadder goes forth is also different from the usual sit-com as it is the same situation every episode. The majority of sit-coms dont do this, instead they are based in the same place, but with a different humorous situation with which the characters have to deal with. In Blackadder Goes Forth the situation is exactly the same just the characters deal with it differently. The situation is that Blackadder himself is trying to escape and relieve himself of the hideous atrocities of the First World War. Of course like in any other sit-com, things go very wrong for him and comic experiences pop up along the way. Altogether Blackadder fits into the situation comedy genre in a sense, as it is a sit-com, but is totally different from the majority of other sit-coms. Blackadder has a different story every episode, involves the same characters in every episode, and takes place in the same place in every episode. The differences of Blackadder to the mainstream of sit-coms are shown obviously. This is shown in many ways; one is that Blackadder is set in different historical time in each different series. This attracts viewers to watch Blackadder, because they want to see something new rather than the usual flat share show with people shouting bawdy jokes. This is why the producers of Blackadder have made the show different from the usual sit-com. Another reason why Blackadder is different from most sit-coms is that the situation is the same in every episode of Blackadder. Nearly every other sit-com has different situations and different ways in which the characters tackle these situations. Blackadder Goes Forth doesnt. The situation is of Blackadder trying to escape the war in any way he can. He tries lots of different approaches to deal with his problem, but every episode he fails. This becomes very amusing as no matter how hard he tries; he just cant get out of fighting in the war. Another very important feature in Blackadder that is dissimilar to other sit-coms is the way that even though the scene is set on a historical time scale, Blackadder still has 20th Century views. All the other characters in the whole programme have views of life that relate to the time scale that they are set in, while Blackadder has views of life that we would. This is what makes Blackadder so hilarious to us, as we can relate to precisely what Blackadder is saying and thinking, while all the other characters in the play are trapped in that time zone with historical thoughts, Blackadder makes fun of all the stupid things that happened within that time zone and has the same views and points to express as we do. The one other reason why Blackadder Goes Forth doesnt fit well into the genre of situation comedies is that Blackadder uses satirical comments and elements throughout the programmes. This makes the programme extremely funny, but also makes a point in which we can understand and learn from. Satire is using humour or exaggeration to show what it is bad about a person or thing. Blackadder uses this strongly in all of its episodes in all of its series. Blackadder: Well George, I strongly suspect your long wait for certain death is nearly at an end This is portraying the scene that everyone who wanted action in the war is going to be sent to his or her deaths. The reason why the produces of Blackadder decided to make different historical time scales for their series was possibly so they could use satire to make a point about those different time lines. With Blackadder using satire in this way it gives viewers the humour and hilarity that we get and love from all sit-coms, but also spreading a point across the country about how bad those situations were and how badly our ancestors handled them. So the reason why Blackadder is a funny character is because he is the only sane man and fools surround him. This makes us learn from mistakes that have happened in the past but also provides us with the amusement that we want when we watch a sit-com. Satirical elements are present in Blackadder, even in the title sequence at the start of each episode. There are many satirical elements in the title sequence; the first one being the two rows of five men marching after a sergeant majors command. The first row of soldiers is bandsmen wearing the traditional red colours of the English army. The second row of soldiers is armed forces, wearing the up-to-date camouflage green. This is satirizing the tactics of the British army. The way in which Blackadder does this is by having the bandsmen in red marching in front of the armed forces, it symbolizes that the bandsmen are more important. It shows that playing instruments and wearing smart colours and clothes into battle is more important then staying undetected with camouflage and looking scruffy. This satirizes British tactics and approach to war. It also shows that the British army is out of date, as fighting in bright colours was a thing of the past, showing that the commanders were just old forgotten war heroes who needed to be slapped up-to-date if they wanted to keep their men alive. It also satirizes the fact that blood is to come for those soldiers are behind. The blood red of the bandsmen shirts marching in front of the armed forces means that blood is to come for them and pour from their bullet stricken bodies. There is a character in Blackadder Goes Forth, named baldrick. In the title sequence he is out of place in the band and is franticly running around to find his place. Baldrick is a private in the army. This satirizes the privates as being stupid and out of place fighting in such a war. Also that Baldrick is in the band, and not in the armed forces row like he should be satirizes that he is out of place in the army, and will do more good playing a triangle in a parade. As baldrick is out of place, there is still no place for him in the ranks of men as both are of equal numbers and there is no more room for him. This emphases the point even more that the dim privates are out of place in the war, and they shouldnt be put there, as they dont understand it. How can a man be expected to shoot if he cant even find a place in a band? This is the satirizing point that Blackadder is making when the character baldrick is out of position. Also in the title sequence General Melchett and Captain Darling are standing atop a podium watching the soldiers march. General Melchett is wearing cavalry clothes. This satirizes the generals in the war by showing that they are out of touch and out of date with the tactics of war. They still think that cavalry are the best option to winning a battle, but now that machine guns have been invented cavalry are useless. Yet the generals do not know this, and assume that old tactics are good, but they arent. Captain Darling is cowering behind the General. This satirizes the Captains in the war. This shows that they were cowards and used the Generals as protection to stop them having to fight. Further on in the title sequence Lieutenant George is smiling in a childish way as he marches forwards. This is satirizing the pompous Lieutenants. Showing that they believe that war is just a game, and they should enjoy every minute off it. This is of course the wrong attitude to take to war, as you killed be obliterated any second. Aside from the title sequence, the whole programme contains satirical elements throughout its course, one of these being the living conditions of the soldiers shown in the programme. Blackadder opens up the programme of the last ever episode of Blackadder goes forth with: Hullo, Somme Public Baths. No running, shouting or piddling in the shallow end. Aside from this being droll, it also makes a great satirical point on how the living conditions of the soldiers actually were. The soldiers were caked in mud up to their elbows and sopping wet with the continuous moral beating rain. It satirizes how bad the living conditions really were by basically saying it was wet, and the rain was the least of the soldiers problems at that time. Private baldrick explains that the coffee that all the soldiers have been drinking for months is actually hot mud. He also describes what each of the elements of the coffee is. He states that the milk is saliva, the sugar is dandruff and although he doesnt state what the chocolate sprinklings are, he gives us a very good idea of what they could be! All this satirizes the living conditions of the poor soldiers that had to live in here day in and day out. They were soaked in rain, encrusted in mud, and drinking hot mire with all manner of things inside, but worst of all being pounded by shells all day long. Blackadder Goes Forth also satirizes everyones attitudes to war. Starting with the Generals, they had the worst attitude towards war. As the Generals were not in the trenches and not experiencing the horrors of war, they had no idea what it was like. The generals still thought war was what it used to be, fighting against unarmed enemies that cant win the fight. As general Melchett explains, That pigmy woman with the sharpened mango could have seriously Apart from this being comical, it has a real satirizing point to it. The old wars in which the English used to fight were against aborigines with no weapons other than maybe a spear. The English couldnt really loose a battle against such little an opposition, and from that day they thought they could win any battle that faced them, as they were full of themselves over their glorious victories. This is the attitude that the generals still possessed when commanding in World War One, especially in the Somme area that Blackadder goes forth is set. It satirizes the generals lack of understanding of modern warfare, and shows how they believe they will always win. In the episode Goodbyeee, Field Marshall Haig is playing with toy soldiers. This is satirizing the generals perspective of warfare, and apart from it being hilarious it proves just what the generals were like. They thought that war was a game and that it didnt matter who won or lost. This is shown as Haig knocks over a handful of the plastic soldiers on his model battlefield. Blackadder himself satirizes the advance and progress the army has made while at war, Weve advanced as far as an asthmatic ant with heavy shopping. Apart from this being droll, it satirizes how far the army progresses with such stupid and out of date tactics and childish generals. This relates highly to World War One as the army progressed about a few inches a year, as the generals just didnt know what to do. Another main thing that is satirized is the ranks of different troops. With the generals, they thought that war was just a game. This is shown and satirized in Blackadder by the way the general plays with toy soldiers. He used this as his tactics, moving individual toys and then knocking them over in one fell swoop. This actually shows that he expected his men to die, but sent them in regardless of the consequences, as he was bored of sitting in one place for a long period of time. Being incredibly child-like satirizes the lieutenants. This is shown in the character George. He is satirizing the pompous upper-class lieutenant. He always has a silly grin on his face and relates everything that happens in the war to a well know game of some sort. He even states that he played tiddly winks when signing up to volunteer for the war. He makes such remarks as by saying, we ducked and we dived. This is satirizing views of many soldiers in the war, as they just didnt have a clue about what it was really like. They just thought it was like participating in a sport match, and whatever the outcome, no one would get hurt, but how wrong they were. The other rank that is displayed and satirized in Blackadder is the private. Baldrick plays this role, and acts as the dim private, which is exactly what he is. He is always one step behind everyone else, in the mental way, and in the literal way. As in the title sequence he is behind everyone, and in the speeches he is behind everyone. He is satirizing the low-class dim private. At the end of the last episode Goodbyeee, just before they are about to go over the top, baldrick is more concerned about getting a splinter while climbing the ladder then getting mowed down in a hail of lead by a machine gun. This is because he doesnt understand what is going on. This is satirizing the fact that the dim people shouldnt be there, because if they dont understand what they are doing, how can they possibly fight? Captain Blackadder plays the other rank. He is the only commonsensical man in the whole warfare situation. This is how Blackadder is made funny, as he satirizes everything around him and makes fun of everything. He shares our views of the war, and tries in vain to get out of fighting just as we would, but to no amend, as the generals cant understand why he would possibly not want to go out and fight. This satirizes the generals lack of understanding. Fools surround Blackadder, this satirizes that everyone fighting was a fool, and with such stupid people everywhere, how can they win the war. It also satirizes that no one understands the war, no matter how clever or how high rank. And that everyone is as stupid as the private as they have no idea to fight a war more than he does. The equipment is the last thing that is satirized. This is done by the sticks that the higher ranking officers hold. These sticks do nothing at all. I wouldnt want to face a machine gun without one of these George explains to Blackadder. This is satirizing the fact that some of the equipment had no purpose, and some of the people didnt have a clue what a machine gun could actually do to you.
